If you’ve clocked over 100,000 miles on your odometer, you probably need a new water pump. This is the cooling system part that moves the coolant throughout the engine. If you are having any of the problems listed below, call us right away for a new water pump.

Rust on the Pump

The water pump is next to the radiator in the front of the engine. If you inspected and see that it is corroded, this is a sign that the pump is leaking coolant slowly. You may not notice a difference in your engine’s temperature because the coolant leak is a minor one. If left unattended, however, it will become a major one. This is why it’s a good idea to replace the water pump now.

Leaking Engine Coolant

Failure to do so will encourage the corrosion to eat through the metal and cause a larger leak. When this happens, your engine’s temperature will start to rise and you will see coolant on your garage floor. Replacing the water pump prevents the coolant loss. If you add coolant to your cooling system before you replace the pump, it is going to leak out of the engine.

Reduced Circulation

We mentioned above that the water pump pushes the coolant through the engine. It is somewhat like a heart pumping blood. When the water pump starts to malfunction, you may end up with reduced: circulation. This, too, will raise the engine’s temperature. If you bring your vehicle to our shop, we can test the coolant circulation to see if it is normal or too low.

Growling Noises

The water pump also has a tendency to fuss when it is going bad. In the case of the pump, it will growl while it is trying to circulate the coolant. You will hear this noise in the engine toward the front, because, as we mentioned above, the water pump is located next to the radiator.

Constant Overheating

Finally, it bears repeating that a faulty water pump is going to make your engine overheat. It doesn’t matter if the pump is leaking or malfunctioning, if your car’s engine overheats all the time, it’s time for a new water pump.
